Rezūm — water vapor treatment of prostate adenoma

Rezūm is a minimally invasive treatment for prostate adenoma (benign prostatic hyperplasia), the enlargement of the prostate common with age that obstructs the flow of urine. Rather than removing the tissue surgically, Rezūm uses the heat of water vapor to gradually shrink the excess prostatic tissue. The procedure is carried out through the natural passages, via the urethra, without any incision. A thin probe fitted with a camera is introduced, and small amounts of water vapor are injected into the part of the prostate that compresses the urinary channel. Over the following weeks, this area shrinks away, the channel opens up and the urinary stream improves. Most often performed under local anesthesia or light sedation and on an outpatient basis, Rezūm preserves continence and, above all, sexual function, particularly ejaculation, which is not always the case with conventional surgery.
