Total knee replacement (TKR)
Replacement of the worn joint surfaces of the knee with a custom-fitted implant, to relieve pain durably and restore walking.
What is it?

When is it indicated?
When the knee cartilage is severely worn, the pain becomes almost constant and interferes with walking as well as rest. The prosthesis replaces the damaged surfaces and eliminates this pain.
When medication, injections and rehabilitation are no longer enough to relieve the knee, prosthetic surgery becomes the lasting solution to regain an active life.
Uneven wear of the knee can cause it to deviate inward or outward, which worsens the pain. The prosthesis corrects this deformity and realigns the leg.
Certain inflammatory diseases attack the cartilage and progressively destroy the knee. The prosthesis restores a stable, pain-free joint.
A fracture involving the joint surface can leave an irregular knee that wears out faster. The prosthesis restores a smooth, functional joint.
When getting around, climbing stairs or simply standing becomes an ordeal, the operation aims to restore independence and comfort in everyday life.
Preparation
Procedure
General anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, often supplemented by regional anesthesia for pain relief
Incision at the front of the knee and exposure of the joint
Precise bone cuts prepared according to the planning
Placement of the femoral and tibial implants and the insert
Check of the stability, alignment and range of motion of the knee
Closure, dressing and transfer to the recovery room
Icing, pain-relief treatment and early first mobilization
Duration
1 to 2 hours
Aftercare & Recovery
Walking resumes within the first few days with crutches, then without assistance over the following weeks. The osteoarthritic pain gradually disappears and knee flexion is recovered through rehabilitation. Most patients regain fluid walking, stair climbing and moderate leisure activities.
Risks and side effects
These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
