What is it?

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows the inside of a joint to be explored and treated using a small camera (arthroscope) and miniaturized instruments introduced through short incisions. It is mainly used for the knee, shoulder and ankle. This approach makes it possible to treat many lesions: meniscal tears, cartilage lesions, intra-articular loose bodies, tendinopathies and shoulder impingement, ankle instability. The absence of a large opening reduces post-operative pain, scarring and recovery time. The procedure is most often performed on an outpatient basis or during a short hospital stay: the patient goes home the same day or the next day, with precise instructions and a rehabilitation program adapted to the treated lesion. When is it indicated?

Meniscal lesions of the knee (tear, bucket-handle tear)

The menisci are the shock absorbers of the knee: when they tear, they cause pain and locking. Arthroscopy makes it possible to repair them or remove the damaged fragment through very small incisions.

Articular cartilage lesions

A damaged area of cartilage can catch and make the joint painful. Arthroscopy makes it possible to treat it without opening the joint widely.

Subacromial impingement and rotator cuff lesions of the shoulder

Abnormal friction between the shoulder tendons and the bone above them causes pain, especially at night and with the arm raised. Arthroscopy releases this impingement and repairs the tendons if needed.

Shoulder or ankle instability

When a joint dislocates or gives way repeatedly, the ligaments can be tightened or repaired under arthroscopy to restore confidence in one's movements.

Intra-articular loose bodies

Small fragments of bone or cartilage can break off and float in the joint, causing locking and pain. Arthroscopy makes it possible to remove them simply.

Joint stiffness requiring a release

When a joint remains stiff despite rehabilitation, a release procedure under arthroscopy helps to recover a comfortable range of motion.

Aftercare & Recovery

Recovery is generally straightforward, with a rapid return to weight-bearing or use of the limb depending on the treated lesion. Rehabilitation, started early, allows a progressive return to daily and then sporting activities, on the surgeon's advice.

Hematoma or effusion, resolving spontaneously
Joint infection, exceptional thanks to strict asepsis conditions
