HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy)

HIPEC, or Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, is an innovative treatment for tumour involvement of the peritoneum, the thin membrane that lines the inside of the abdomen and envelops the digestive organs. It combines two complementary stages within a single operation. The first stage is surgical: the surgeon removes as completely as possible all visible lesions of the peritoneum, a procedure called cytoreduction. The second stage consists of circulating heated chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity for a set period: the heat enhances the effectiveness of the treatment, which acts in direct contact with the areas to be treated while limiting diffusion to the rest of the body. This combined approach is intended for selected cases of peritoneal involvement, after an in-depth work-up and validation in a multidisciplinary consultation meeting. It represents one of the most advanced treatments in abdominal oncological surgery and requires a specifically trained team.
